The call for papers for the 57th Annual Conference of the British Association for Applied Linguistics is now open.

BAAL 2024 will be hosted by the Department of Language and Linguistics at the University of Essex on the 5th, 6th and 7th September 2024. Our conference theme is Applied linguistics in contemporary contexts: practices, approaches and future directions and is an invitation to explore and discuss what applied linguistics has to offer in terms of understanding contemporary issues and challenges. The theme is an opportunity for us to reflect on the changing practices and approaches that contemporary contexts require us to adapt to, as well as looking to the future to explore what roles we see applied linguistics playing in our increasingly interdisciplinary worlds. We particularly encourage submissions that engage with multilingualism, the role of applied linguistics in interdisciplinary research, social justice, and advancing technologies in social, education and workplace contexts.

Our keynote speakers are:

  • Professor Uju Anya, Carnegie Mellon University
  • Professor Rodney Jones, University of Reading
  • Professor Bonny Norton, University of British Columbia
  • Professor Julia Snell, University of Leeds
