Judging of titles

(1) All entries to the BAAL Book Prize will be considered by a panel of expert reviewers. The panel will recommend titles for the shortlist. BAAL conflict of interest procedures will be strictly adhered to in all stages of the competition. While there is no separate category for the final winner, we encourage entries that belong to the “first book” category. This category is created to give recognition of outstanding first books for the 2025 cycle. Please provide such information where applicable when submitting nominations.

(2) The shortlisted titles will be considered by a second panel of judges who are themselves experienced researchers and authors and well known in the field.

(3) Eligibility is not restricted to UK-based publishers/authors. We welcome nominations from publishers outside the UK. However, we request that nominating publishers be associated with BAAL (i.e., an associate member of BAAL) to encourage ongoing dialogues with our community. Exceptions can be made on a case-by-case basis for emerging publishers or publishers based in OECD developing countries for whom the cost of affiliation can be challenging to meet. Please get in touch with the Publications Secretary if you wish to discuss such an exception.

(4) The process of selection and judging is designed to bring nominated titles to the attention of staff and students in a wide range of institutions. Even where nominations are not shortlisted, we publicise nominated titles through our newsletter, website announcements and on social media. Publishers are encouraged to coordinate their nominations as we ask publishers to limit the number of entries to 5 each year.

(5) The definition of ‘applied linguistics’ is to be interpreted in a wide sense. Please refer to <a id="OWA999baa39-9041-8d44-e89f-dc13875c5a7d" title="Original URL: https://www.baal.org.uk/british-association-for-applied-linguistics/what-applied-linguistics-is-and-does/.

Posted on 30th January 2023

BAAL acknowledges that many of our members are engaging in industrial action organised by the University and College Union (UCU). We express solidarity with those taking part in the action. We recognise the importance of this action and the challenging environment faced by those working in higher education, and we understand the sacrifices being made by all involved.

As an independent learned society and registered charity, BAAL itself is not subject to the current strike action, and we must ensure that we do not engage in secondary action. Our membership includes teachers, publishers, third-sector workers and members of the public as well as academics, including those who are not members of the UCU. Those members who are not members of UCU or directly impacted may wish to find out more about the reasons behind this industrial action via the UCU website and can sign up as a supporter through the same route.

BAAL will do everything in our power to support our members in appropriate ways during this period. The BAAL Executive Committee will avoid posting to BAAL mail or using social media on strike days; we will be sympathetic towards those wishing to cancel attendance at any events; liaise with academics who have organised events regarding whether to postpone them; and extend deadlines that fall within this period of strike action.

Please contact the BAAL Secretary, Caroline Tagg (caroline.tagg@open.ac.uk), if you have any questions or concerns.

3rd prize: Languages: Time Dreams Avatars by Elina Karadzhova

We are delighted to invite you to the BAAL/Cambridge University Press Applied Linguistics Seminar Programme 2018-2019: Creative Inquiry in Applied Linguistics: Purposes, Practices, Possibilities at University of Leeds, 10th-11th July 2019. Please find the full Call for Papers and registration here – https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1s8xiuwywaguEpxZInpbZr6CHCOE6zzFa.

The increasing range of applied linguistic projects which engage with the arts offer approaches to research and education which can move beyond traditional research methods, offering new ways to engage with people’s complex communicative, affective, experiential and political realities. They enable us to challenge accepted boundaries, open up possibilities and disrupt fixed and binary orientations, and offer new understandings of the range and complexity of communication in personal and social repertoires. However, applied linguistics is a broad and inherently interdisciplinary field, and the definitions, practices and implications of creative inquiry for applied linguistics are as yet under-explored and under-examined. This seminar therefore aims to foster discussion between established academics, early-career researchers, and artist-researchers in order to address the questions: What is creative inquiry? and What are its affordances for applied linguistics? It will initiate exploration of three broad themes:

1. creative methods (e.g. collage, drama, music) for understanding, researching and teaching communication;

2. applied linguistic methods for researching creative/artistic practice or researching arts as objects of communication;
