2nd prize: (Inter)weaving repertoires by Gail Prasad

3rd prize: Languages: Time Dreams Avatars by Elina Karadzhova

We are delighted to invite you to the BAAL/Cambridge University Press Applied Linguistics Seminar Programme 2018-2019: Creative Inquiry in Applied Linguistics: Purposes, Practices, Possibilities at University of Leeds, 10th-11th July 2019. Please find the full Call for Papers and registration here – https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1s8xiuwywaguEpxZInpbZr6CHCOE6zzFa.

The increasing range of applied linguistic projects which engage with the arts offer approaches to research and education which can move beyond traditional research methods, offering new ways to engage with people’s complex communicative, affective, experiential and political realities. They enable us to challenge accepted boundaries, open up possibilities and disrupt fixed and binary orientations, and offer new understandings of the range and complexity of communication in personal and social repertoires. However, applied linguistics is a broad and inherently interdisciplinary field, and the definitions, practices and implications of creative inquiry for applied linguistics are as yet under-explored and under-examined. This seminar therefore aims to foster discussion between established academics, early-career researchers, and artist-researchers in order to address the questions: What is creative inquiry? and What are its affordances for applied linguistics? It will initiate exploration of three broad themes:

1. creative methods (e.g. collage, drama, music) for understanding, researching and teaching communication;

2. applied linguistic methods for researching creative/artistic practice or researching arts as objects of communication;

We hope the conference theme will encourage proposals from a wide range of disciplines and that this in turn will encourage cross-disciplinary dissemination of ideas and research. Our Local Organising Committee is drawn from different faculties and departments across the university – the School of Teacher Education and Professional Development and the School of Childhood, Youth and Educational Studies, both within the Faculty of Education, the Department of Languages, Information and Communications within the Faculty of Arts and Humanities, and the Faculty of Health, Psychology & Social Care.

Manchester is only two hours from London by train, and in easy reach of Liverpool, Chester, North Wales and the Lake District, the Peak District and Yorkshire. The campus is easily accessible by car and rail. The University is a 20-minute walk or a short taxi ride from the train station. There is a direct train from Manchester Airport.

Submitting your abstract to a SIG track may or may not lead to your paper being included in a SIG track and has no impact on abstract acceptance to the conference. BAAL has thirteen Special Interest Groups. They are: (1) Corpus Linguistics; (2) Health and Science Communication; (3) Intercultural Communication; (4) Language, Gender and Sexuality; (5) Language and New media; (6) Language in Africa; (7) Language Learning and Teaching; (8) Language Policy; (9) Linguistic Ethnography; (10) Linguistics and Knowledge about Language in Education; (11) Professional, Academic and Work-based Literacies (PAWBL); (12) Testing, Evaluation and Assessment; (13) Vocabulary Studies.

Colloquia proposers should plan their half day in four slots, in step with the individual paper slots. If they wish to have a larger number of papers, they may fit two papers into what would normally be a single slot. Colloquia papers should cohere. The order of the papers should not be changed after acceptance. An abstract for the colloquium introduction is required along with abstracts for each paper within the colloquium (300 words per abstract). Please state explicitly in the abstract text to say that it’s part of a colloquium (with colloquium title).

Poster

We strongly encourage the submission of abstracts for posters. We aim to raise the profile of posters at our conference since we value them as equal to other forms of presentation, and we believe that they tend to receive more feedback than individual papers. All posters will be listed in the book of abstracts, and there will be a dedicated area and time slot for discussion of poster presentations. There will also be a £50 prize for best poster displayed at the conference.

BAAL offers 4-5 full conference scholarships (for students or early career researchers, with the latter defined as being within 2 years of PhD completion). Monies from a special ring-fenced fund, contributed by donors, will pay for the additional ‘Chris Brumfit scholarship’ for up to £1,000, which is usually targeted at delegates from outside Britain who would not otherwise have funds to do so to attend the BAAL Annual Meeting.

A concern with institutional context has enabled researchers to maintain a focus on literacies within domains of power, to substantiate a critique of the vested interests which shape institutions, policies and working practices, and to raise questions about the kinds of literacy/ies which are, and are not, valued within those institutions. At the same time, current theorisation in literacies research emphasises the need to take account of the fluid nature of literacy which follows from its fundamentally social character. Changing communication practices have challenged researchers to question established boundaries between modes, languages, writers and readers, and domains. Texts, writers and readers are in constant movement across time and space, shifting between different work, life and study contexts, in and out of different roles and institutions. This symposium will explore emerging questions about how we understand the continuities and discontinuities between different institutional and professional contexts, and about how individuals might manage (and be helped to manage) their trajectories between, in and out of such spaces.

Some of the key questions the symposium will explore are:

How do individuals negotiate the different and sometimes conflicting demands of academic and professional domains, for example in undergraduate vocational higher education or those studying for a professional master’s degree or doctorate? How can literacies in these complex domains be effectively supported? What are the implications for pedagogy within and beyond institutions?

How do writers and readers move between different institutional contexts and practices in daily life and over the life span? Do they experience continuities or discontinuities? With what consequences, for example, for access? How best can these shifts be researched and theorized, and how can our understanding be applied?

What does the lens of institutionally sponsored literacies as ‘labour’ bring to our understanding of literacy practices within, on the margins of and outside of institutions? What are the wider implications for contemporary theorizing of literacies?

How can deeper understanding of literacies as situated social practice contribute to an understanding of institutional and social change, and how can it influence such change in positive ways, for example through policy work?

How do writers from different institutional and non-institutional backgrounds work collaboratively to produce texts, and how can such work be supported?

The event will combine a plenary talk by visiting speaker Dr Karin Tusting, round table discussions and presentation sessions. The aim is to continue to foster conversations on these and other issues relevant to the production, consumption and evaluation of texts in professional, academic and workplace contexts.

We welcome proposals for contributions of two kinds:

10-minute informal round table presentations on any aspects of the symposium theme. These presentations should take the form of a brief summary/statement of a specific research finding/project/interest/problem, followed by a specific question the presenter is currently grappling with (with presenters providing handouts for participants).

Up to 20-minute ‘formal’ presentations [with an additional 10 minutes for Q and A] on any aspects of the symposium theme. Presenters are welcome to use slides and/or handouts, but don’t have to.

We are sorry to announce the death on 1 March 2019 of former BAAL executive member, David Graddol, aged 65.

David was very active in the association in its early years, and was the prime instigator of the annual BAAL book prize. He is survived by his wife, Margaret Keeton, and triplet daughters. There will be no public funeral. Instead, Margaret has said ‘I would like people who knew David – and there were probably thousands who knew/knew of him through his work and conferences – to enjoy their memories of what he contributed in their own ways.’

David’s former Open University colleague Barbara Mayor (barbara.mayor@open.ac.uk) would be happy to convey any personal messages to the family.
