PhD scholarship on Second Language Acquisition of English grammar at Cambridge

Applications are invited for a PhD scholarship on second language acquisition of English grammar, at the Research Centre for English and Applied Linguistics, University of Cambridge. The scholarship is sponsored by Education First, a world-leading educational organisation in language learning, as part of the recent launch of the Education First Research Unit at the University of Cambridge. The Education First Research Unit was launched in February 2010 to promote research in second language learning of English and innovation in language teaching through a systematic cross-fertilisation between linguistic research and teaching techniques and curricula.

The goals of the EF Research Unit are aligned with the English Profile Programme, a collaborative programme to enhance the learning, teaching and assessment of English worldwide, launched by the British Council, Cambridge ESOL, Cambridge University Press, the University of Cambridge, English UK, and other academic institutions.

Applications are invited for a research project leading to a PhD in one of the following areas:
      1. L1 effects on learner grammars: typologies of learner grammars based on L1 effects.
      2. Age-related developmental effects: adult vs. child second language acquisition.
      3. The effect of input on learner grammars: explicit instruction vs. immersion.

Proposals should focus on specific morphosyntactic phenomena or interactions between grammar and its interfaces with interpretation (discourse, information structure, semantics) and/or processing.

The scholarship covers university fees, College fees, and maintenance as set out at
http://www.admin.cam.ac.uk/offices/gradstud/funding/costs/courses/graduate.html.

The successful candidate should have a degree in (applied) linguistics or a related discipline and will be expected to collaborate with members of the EF Research Unit and researchers working on English Profile at RCEAL.

The closing date for this application is Tuesday 7th September 2010. Shortlisted candidates will be invited for an interview on Wednesday 22nd September 2010. The successful candidate is expected to start in January 2011. Before applying, please consult the information on Graduate Admissions at http://www.admin.cam.ac.uk/offices/gradstud/admissions/. We currently have five datasets in the archive, with over 200 hours of unique video and audio data, plus transcriptions. There's lots more on the way before the end of the project, including UCL DCAL's BSL Corpus.

The data stored in the CAVA repository is available for use by any registered member. Please contact Matt (the CAVA project officer) at lib-cava @ ucl.ac.uk to sign up. You can find further information on how to become a user of the repository here: http://www.ucl.ac.uk/ls/cava/faq.shtml
