Job description
The Faculty is looking for an experienced and dynamic academic to join its team. The post will involve the
establishment and leadership of a new Doctorate in Education. The successful candidate must hold a
PhD and will be expected to:
• have an established record of successful doctoral supervision
• have evidence of strong leadership skills
• be able to work in a collaborative manner in a small group environment
• have experience of working on an EdD programme, preferably with a UK university
• have a considerable research and publications record in education or a related area
• be able to contribute to the teaching in one or more of the areas offered in the Faculty
Appointments
The successful candidate will be appointed at the appropriate level and will be expected to join in
September 2009. The person appointed will be resident in the UAE. He or she will also be nominated as
an Honorary Fellow at the University of Birmingham, with accompanying privileges such as full online
access to the University’s extensive library holdings.
Qualifications
The successful candidate will have a PhD or equivalent, with a strong and growing publication record
evidencing excellent potential for further research. Relevant teaching experience in higher education and
at postgraduate level is essential. Ability to teach transferable skills in the above subject areas would be
advantageous.
Salary and Benefits
The appointment will be made at the Professor / Senior Lecturer level, and at a point on the salary scale
as appropriate. The remuneration package will include a contribution to housing of AED 90,000 per
annum, schooling fees up to AED 40,000 per annum each, for up to two children of school age (eighteen
years maximum) to be paid against invoice, medical insurance, and economy class annual flights for the
member of staff and spouse and up to two children, once permanently relocated to the UAE. A set-up
package of AED 60,000 will be paid for Professor / Senior Lecturers. An appropriate proportion of this will
become repayable in the event of the employee leaving the service of BUiD within three years.
Attendance at up to three conferences an international, a regional and a local conference in each
academic year is funded as per the conference participation policy.
An end of service gratuity of one month’s salary for each complete year of service will be paid in
accordance with UAE Labour Law.
At the present time, no income tax is payable for residents of the UAE.

Qualifications:
Candidates should possess
- a Master of Arts degree in Applied Linguistics, TESOL or related field

Responsibilities:
The successful candidate is expected to
- teach various courses, both at undergraduate or postgraduate levels
- undertake pedagogical research
- engage in pedagogic and research work in the area of language testing, including the construction and validation of English language tests, especially for large scale testing situations.

University of Salford - Specialist in Second Language Acquisition
We are looking for a specialist in second language acquisition to deliver a 3rd year undergraduate module in second language student acquisition in semester one 2009-10. The position would be ideal for PhD student who is near completion or a newly graduated PhD student living in the north west of the UK. Materials and handbook are available; however, we are prepared to be flexible about the curriculum.
Currently, the syllabus for the module includes: Approaches to second language acquisition including behaviouristic approaches, contrastive analysis and error analysis; The concept of Interlanguage; The Monitor Model; The Universal Grammar approach; Instructed SLA; Sociocultural perspectives on SLA; Learner individual differences and their effect on SLA.

One-Year Teaching Post
Liverpool University
We are looking to appoint someone to teach ELT methodology and pedagogically-oriented discourse analysis, and to manage our postgraduate programmes in this field, partly as cover for a member of staff who is on research leave until January 2010. This is a one-year post in the first instance, starting in September 2009. (There is a possibility that we will be able to advertise a permanent post at a subsequent date.) The person appointed would be responsible for directing two linked MAs: the MA in Applied Linguistics for EFL teachers with a minimum of 2 years experience, and the MA in TESOL for candidates with little or no teaching experience. The person will also teach at least two of the modules on the MAs in each semester. There is some flexibility over the precise subjects to be taught, but they will be drawn from a list which includes modules on Classroom Observation, Lexis and Vocabulary Teaching, Reading and Writing, Psychology and Language Learning, English for Specific Purposes, and Research Methods for Applied Linguistics.
